The trial between the Motion Picture Association of America and RealNetworks over the latter’s brief foray into DVD burning technology with RealDVD last fall is being heard this week in San Francisco. RealNetworks contends that its program, which allowed users to rip a copy of a DVD to their hard drives, was meant for a one-time rip to a portable device, which falls in the realm of fair use.
